Book authors

For book authors

Twenty questions about the book you wrote and the writer behind it — fifteen about the work, five about you.

20 questions, not yet answered here. Every question is asked in FLAPSS wording — nobody answers as anybody else.

Every question in this questionnaire

  1. If you had to tell a reader what this book is really about — beyond the synopsis — what would you say? —
  2. Where did the idea for this book begin? Was there an experience, question, person, event, image, or moment that set it in motion? —
  3. Why did this particular book need to exist? What did you want to explore, understand, challenge, preserve, or communicate? —
  4. How did the book change between the first idea and the final version — in story, argument, structure, or your own understanding? —
  5. What surprised you most while writing or researching the book? Did anything overturn your assumptions or redirect the work? —
  6. Which chapter, scene, character, argument, or discovery became especially important to you, and why does it stand out? —
  7. What was the hardest part of writing this book — creatively, intellectually, emotionally, technically, or in deciding what to leave out? —
  8. Is there an important creative choice in the book that readers may not notice at first — in structure, language, voice, chronology, or point of view? —
  9. Was there material you wanted to include but removed, reshaped, or chose not to discuss? What led to that decision? —
  10. Which books, writers, people, places, ideas, experiences, or events most shaped this particular book? —
  11. Was anyone behind the scenes — an editor, researcher, friend, early reader — whose contribution materially changed how you approached the work? —
  12. Is there an idea, character, argument, or aspect of the book you expect readers to interpret differently? How do you feel about that range of readings? —
  13. Is there something in the book you hope readers will question, debate, or disagree with you about? —
  14. When someone finishes the last page, what do you hope stays with them — an idea, emotion, question, image, or impulse to act differently? —
  15. What do you wish people asked you about this book more often — something overlooked in other conversations? —
  16. How would you describe yourself as a writer — your voice, your approach, and the subjects you keep returning to? —
  17. What does your writing process actually look like? Walk us through your routines, habits, places, times of day, tools, or rituals. —
  18. How much of your own life finds its way into your writing, even when the work is fictional, academic, historical, or far from autobiography? —
  19. What has being a writer taught you about yourself — and how has it changed the way you observe people and the world? —
  20. Outside of writing, what might surprise or interest readers about you — a profession, hobby, obsession, or part of life that shaped who you became? —
