I have quite a collection of ironic band T shirts.

A tractor, 12 years ago. Bright yellow and still brilliant.

A trip that was, like, $100k. It was a lot of money and I didn’t even go on it. It was to St Barts. I paid for me and my friends and a lot of stuff fell apart, and then it ended up with one of my friends just going with his girlfriend.

An old camper van that has cost me more in repairs than my house, my wedding and all the holidays I’ve ever been on.

But I was supported by an incredibly strong crew, many of whom I’ve known for years from having worked in New Zealand. It was a very collaborative effort.

When my wife Lorraine and I got together in 1990. We were in a play at the Royal Exchange theatre in Manchester when we suddenly realised we were falling in love.

When I became a professional actor I was fortunate to be given my first job there by a director called Jonathan Petherbridge.…He instilled in me a way of thinking about acting, which was about as far away from it being a vain occupation as possible, in that drama has significant possibilities for change in society, however small.

It begins with knowing the story you want to tell. There are thousands of stories contained within the world that Samantha has created – we have to be very disciplined about opening up the world in a way that will lead us on to further investigation in the rest of the series. We need to find the emotional heart of the story; the relationships; the tension; the suspense and the drive; and of course working closely with Samantha is going to make it much easier.
