Clearing up someone’s sick – it was on police duty.

When I was a teenager I worked as a lifeguard, and one of our duties was to clean the showers. It essentially involved cleaning people’s pubes from the drain.

Pressing uniforms in a laundry. I was 14. I lied about my age and said I was 16, even though I probably looked about 12.

I worked in the largest pork pie factory in Europe. I had a plastic mushroom-shaped thing and had to tamp down the meat into the pie base. It was a conveyor belt of pies from nine to five. The worst thing was the crackly AM radio, which was played loudly through the tinny tannoy system. I still can’t listen to I’m Not In Love by 10cc without thinking of raw minced pork.

Shares in The Way, which turned out to be the best movie I have done. Written and directed by my son Emilio, it’s a father-son story about the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.

That I was partially responsible for bringing some extraordinary human beings into the world, and they responded to me as a loving father.

My wife Janet: she is the most scrupulously honest human being I have ever encountered.
