We didn’t research the product. We didn’t launch a focus group or field a study. We had an idea, and we acted. The results informed our thinking.

You’re talking about going back to as a freshman in high school. Every day from August until — the season is growing in pro ball — but August to December. Practice is at this time. It’s 4:00 to 6:00 in high school, it’s 2:00 to 4:00 in college, and it’s 1:00 to 3:00 in pro ball, but that is your routine.

It comes out of an intuition, or a learned intuition, I guess. You study a long time ’til you can do it. But it’s from looking around you, it’s from understanding what’s happening in the culture, what’s happening in the world.

Anyone can talk. Anyone can write. It takes discipline and rigor

I want to make a movie. I’ve got a very strong movie in my head. And I’ve spoken to some movie people and I’ve said, “If you say it’s no go, I’ll drop it.” They said — two different people — “Do the script.” So I’m encouraged enough to do that.

I look back on it with a sense of achievement at having been part of that tremendous process.

I’d say, “I’m going to be a doctor.” I don’t know why I changed. I know my dad had something to do with it.

I’d been introduced to Freud through all this because I couldn’t understand why is it so difficult to be brave. There was something inside me that wanted to collaborate all the time with the people who wanted to destroy me, and I was searching for it, and I found there was a thing called the unconscious that everybody has. And you’ve got to be in touch with the unconscious to understand a lot of your behavior. And I read through volume after volume after volume of the collected works of Sigmund Freud.

He’s been a total delight. So I now have a son of 41, a son of 40 and one of four.

And when I spoke once, very recently, about African artists, you were resistant to that idea of African art. The Africans who are artists, but they're artists, they were artists.
