I was a huge daydreamer and imagined myself as a successful general leading his troops into battle.

A missionary in Africa – I think that was Sunday school-based.

An actress. I started when I was 13 at theatre school. My first assembly, Tom and I were sat next to each other.

I always wanted to play tennis. Otherwise, I always thought it would be fun to do something in mathematics or physics.

I had a teacher who was a great influence on me, when I was in boarding school at Loomis, Jim Wilson. He was my economics teacher and he was also my dorm head. I didn’t know what economics was before I took this course. I was really moved by the course. I was moved by him. That’s probably one of the reasons I chose the field of business.

I also developed an unhelpful aversion to asking for favors. Frankly, if I had sought help from others, I would have made far fewer mistakes.

So, it was hard to fathom letting go. Age was part of the reason. We were both 77 at that time.

I don’t like those people that only want to be nice to people that they consider their equal or above them as far as maybe they’ve got money or something like that.

There is nothing more important to me than my children and focusing on them. It’s the quality of time with my children, not the quantity of time that I’ve found to be important.

We have made many investments in our history. Not all have succeeded. As entrepreneurs willing to take some risk, we have made many mistakes. But when we are successful, we leave the company better than we found it.
